A new precedent, but is it a good one?

Last week we were the first to break the story of state Senator Bob Regola stepping down and likely being replaced by Kim Ward. Now that it has officially happened, political campaigns may never be the same in Pennsylvania.

If Regola had been convicted of a crime when charges were brought against him it would make sense for him to step aside, much like when state Representative Sean Ramaley stepped down after charges were filed against him in Bonusgate.

But Regola was cleared of the criminal charges. Regola is stepping down because his polling numbers are bad. Once a candidate is on the ballot should they be allowed to be replaced because they are not polling well? Should the campaign committees for both the Democrats and Republicans commission polls a week before the deadline and decided who is trailing badly and replace them on the ballot? That is effectively what has happened today. The Republicans polled the district, found out Regola was trailing badly and decided they needed to replace him with a candidate who would be stronger.

We need to wonder aloud what type of precedent this sets. Will this become a norm? Should this become a norm or should a candidate need a more valid reason to drop out and be replaced besides they can’t win?

A new precedent has been set, but is it a good one?

More Inside Edge

Below is Regola's official statement

The following is a statement from State Senator Bob Regola:

“After much consideration, I have decided to not be a candidate for reelection to the Pennsylvania Senate.

This has been one of the most difficult decisions I have ever faced because of my desire to see the cause of conservative reform advance in Harrisburg and because of my fondness of serving the people of the 39th District.

For the past four years I have fought to reform our government, lower taxes, bring home Westmoreland County’s fair share from Harrisburg , and stand up for our conservative values.  I am proud of my record of the last four years and look forward to serving out my term and continuing to work on these priorities.  I want to thank the voters for the trust they placed in me.

Despite my belief that I would win re-election, I am unwilling to put my family, friends and supporters through the type of negative campaign that my opponent would likely conduct.  Even though the jury acquitted me of these charges in less than 3 hours, my political opponents and some of the news media would likely spend the next several months vilifying me further. As one of the jurors has said, this was a political witch hunt, and I did not want to put my family through additional anguish.

I am disappointed in the conduct of the media during this process.  They have focused on sensationalism more than the facts of this case.  Despite my acquittal, it is easy to see that voters can have doubts about my character given what the media unfairly wrote about me.  Their tabloid like reporting has tarnished my reputation in this community, and made it more difficult to seek reelection.

The death of Louis Farrell was a tragedy for the Farrell family and also for mine.  Early on I attempted to reach out to the family but they rebuffed these attempts.  Since then, the trial attorney they hired to represent them has attempted to denigrate me in the press by misrepresenting my actions and most of the time, outright lying about the facts of the case to create uncertainty among the public.

I have worked hard over the past four years to do my best to represent the people of my district.  I have done so with honesty and integrity. I want to thank my friends and supporters who wanted me to fight on.  Stepping aside helps me serve a cause greater than self and to ensure that our district has the type of representative it deserves.”

It's a horrible idea

It's a horrible idea democrat or republican. You're down a couple points and you drop out after being awarded a nomination by your party. It's cowardly no matter what your party. Had Regola actually been convicted, he was in poor health, or worse, no problem. Dropping out because you think you might lose is laughable. It should not be allowed. If he was half the man he believes himself to be, he should have at least tried. As far as the media goes the local media (I.E.) the Tribune-Review was in his corner from start to finish. I actually liked him until I read his statement today, now I think he's a jerk. I'm now going to vote for Bompiani no matter who else runs in his place. I had a lot of respect for Bompiani for never bringing up Regola's troubles in the first place.

It's important to remember

It's important to remember that Regola's legal battles ae not over. The Farrells are planning to name the Senator, his wife and young son in a wrongful death suit that could be costly and emotionally draining to fight.

Westmoreland GOP girl's

Westmoreland GOP girl's point is taken, but is kind of pointless. If neither Regola nor his attorney expected to have a civil suit filed neither is living on earth. He sure as heck knew when he accepted the GOP's nomination that he was going to be sued no matter what happend. If that potential was a factor as she states, then he should have given the party a chance and not accepted the nomination in the first place. He thought he could win and that was not a concern. When he saw the latest polls he chickened out for lack of a better term. He knew he was going to lose and withdrew. I'm glad he's gone after this performance. His statement is laughable, if the polls weren't so bad he'd never consider withdrawing. Then he tries to make it look like he's a party man by withdrawing on the last day possible. He's a loser for sure now no matter what the voters say.

Regola

what I know for sure:

Louie Farrell died 7-22-06 at the age of 14 as a direct result of a choice the Senator made one day when he bought a hand gun for his own 14 yr old son who incidently was found guilty last summer for illegally having that gun. I have folowed this case closely and what I see is that the Senator has to step down now before the wrongful death lawsuit the Farrells filed against him,his wife and son begins because it is just a nmatter of time now as to when the truth will come out that Louie Farrell did not commit suicide and the civil trial will prove that unless he,his wife and son all take the fifth again . If that happens of course the case will be won by the Farrells but thats not what they really want. The Farrells aren't interested in money they want to know what happened to their son and only the Regolas know and they have all refused to tell the truth. For better understanding of why he is agreeing to leave look at www.thepittsburghchannel.com watch the video of the Farrell Attorney (Jon Perry explaing why the Farrels are filing a civil suit against the Regolas) After hearing his interview things are more crystalized as to why the Republicans need to act now and not waste any more campaign money on a guy that has this much legal trouble.
This precedent will probably never be needed again unless another senator and his wife or public figure gets themselves into a situation like this one Regola has done to himself by not telling the truth from day one. The things he has stated to the press about Louie Farrell has been so insulting to the Farrell family, He blames the press when they have been so fair to him
to a fault.
He talks too much and displays his arrogence
him stepping down is the only right thing he has done in 2 years. Theres been no withch hunt there is achild that died as a result of choices he made.
He made a wreckless decision to give his son a gun at the age of 14 as a gift with no

Deborah, since you can't

Deborah, since you can't possibly be suggesting that any of the Regolas actually, physically pulled the trigger in Louis Farrell's death, what on earth are you saying?

I'm not looking at this through a political lens at all. Throughout high school and college I worked as a volunteer peer counselor and met more of my classmates than I would've ever expected who were contemplating suicide - they were all referred to professional help posthaste. A young person who has decided to do harm to himself will find a way. Always. That he used the Regolas' gun is tragic in that the lives of TWO families, not just one, were shattered. His death is tragic, but it is not the Regolas fault in that if he had made the decision to do harm to himself and had not had access to that particular gun, another way would have presented itself.

No, if it happend that way

No, if it happend that way the Regola's did not pull the trigger and yes there are a lot of young people with serious issues. Although Senator Regola gave the keys to his home to a 14 yr old kid and left a loaded, unlocked, deadly weapon in his home. I don't care who you are that is wreckless behavior. A gun owner with any sense knows that. If this was your child, grandchild, relative, etc. you would have been screaming from the rooftops for Regola to be prosecuted. He somehow evaded being found guilty when his son was found guilty of posession of the gun. 2 trials same subject two different outcomes? Regola's thoughtlessness led to Lou Farrell's death and there is no way to change that. Again he left a child with the keys to his home that contained an unlocked, loaded weapon, enough said.
